Formentino is
the color of a Cane Corso that is "Grey Fawn" or "Blue
Fawn" with a "Grey" or "Blue" mask (the term "Grey" is more
commonly used in Europe and "Blue" is more commonly used
in North America, but their meaning is one and the same). The
nose of a formentino dog matches the mask and should be grey.
The eyes of a formentino dog should be
coat-related.
The name "Formentino" is derived
from the name "Frumentino" but their meaning is one and the
same. It is considered a "diluted" color and therefore,
careful consideration should be made when breeding so as not
to magnify the dilution. The presence of stronger pigmentation
is preferred and it is evidenced by dark nails and pads and a
strong, charcoal-grey mask that extends to the
eyes.
California's Romeo del Morgan
(pictured above and right) is an excellent example of a
formentino with strong pigment. His sire (Curgan) is black and
his dam (Morgana) is fawn and he was the only formentino
in his litter. He also has proven his dominant genes by
producing 69% formentino puppies when mating with a fawn
female, California's Arianna "Giulietta" da Crocicchia
(normally the ratio would be 70% fawn and 30%
formentino).
